❤️😃 I found the company which allows the time to focus on my own health, time with the family, live a lifestyle and still earn a income to contribute to the household, rather than living on disability support pension.

❤️👍😃 He didn't fail 10,000 times. He simply found 10,000 ways that didn't work. Thomas Edison's journey to invent the light bulb is a powerful reminder that every setback is a step forward. His perseverance and positive outlook transformed what others saw as failure into valuable lessons on the path to success.

That doctor's appointment. Those words. They echoed in my mind long after I left the clinic in Allambie back in 2006. "You need to make changes. Significant changes. Or you're heading down a dangerous path." It was a stark warning, a cold splash of reality that cut through the comforting denial I’d been living in. I’d been interested in changing my health a little over the years prior but had been unable to keep the momentum going.
Let's be honest, hearing you need to overhaul your lifestyle to avoid serious health problems isn't exactly a pleasant experience. Fear, denial, maybe even a little anger – it all bubbles up. But beneath it all, for me at least, was a flicker of something else: a chance. A chance to take control, to feel better, to actually live better.
So, where do you even begin when faced with such a monumental task? It can feel overwhelming, like climbing a mountain with no visible peak. But I've learned that the key is to take it one step at a time. Here’s how I started my journey, and hopefully, it can inspire you too:
Acknowledge and Accept: This was the toughest step. Truly absorbing the doctor's words and accepting that my current habits were unsustainable was crucial. No more excuses, no more "I'll start tomorrow." Tomorrow is today. I knew that needed to change even when families health was poor on its own.
Small, Sustainable Changes: I didn't try to become a health guru overnight. Instead, I focused on making small, manageable changes that I could realistically stick with.
* Nutrition: Instead of drastically cutting out everything I enjoyed, I started by adding more fruits and vegetables to my meals. I swapped sugary drinks for water and started paying attention to portion sizes.
Movement: I started out at the gym making a appointment with the exercise physiologist who helped me get some exercise in and go from there. Slowly, I increased the intensity and duration. Now I am active 5 days a week either a swim of 50 laps or a walk around 30 min.
Sleep: I underestimated the power of sleep for years. I started prioritizing a regular sleep schedule. I’d been a shift worker for years.
Seek Support: You don't have to do this alone. Don't hesitate to lean on your network.
Celebrate Small Wins: Every positive step, no matter how small, is a victory. Did you choose a salad over fries? Did you go for a walk even when you didn't feel like it? Acknowledge and celebrate these wins. They build momentum and keep you motivated.
Be Patient and Kind to Yourself: There will be setbacks. There will be days when you slip up and fall back into old habits. Don't beat yourself up about it. Forgive yourself, learn from it, and get back on track. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
Regular Check-Ins: I continue to have regular check-ups with my doctor to monitor my progress and make any necessary adjustments to my plan. This ongoing support is invaluable.
The journey to a healthier lifestyle isn't always easy, but it is absolutely worth it. That wake-up call was the catalyst I needed, and while it was initially scary, it ultimately led me to a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life right here in West Ryde. If you've received a similar warning, I hope my experience encourages you to take that first step. You've got this. I’d love to hear about Your health story and what made you change your health and life. comment below with what changed your life?
