Dear Ben,

Here is your Friday story,

Falling into the Rhythm of Life
Life Lessons Straight from the Horse’s Mouth

“It's not how far you fall, but how high you bounce that counts.” ~ Zig Ziglar

Did you ever make one decision that would change your life forever? I did. It was on July 11, 2008. I was performing for parents of children who had attended my horseback riding camp, and I made the decision to pay more attention to the crowd than to Malachi, my horse. This is the story of my fall, what I’ve learned through my recovery, and the unwavering strength I have gained from the “great fall” that has made me so “grate-full.”

There is one moment in time I will never forget. Falling through the air, I felt light, weightless, and suspended in time. My head slammed off the ground, and the force from the bounce after the first hit sent my body upright. My head, back and hips slammed against the cement-like ground over and over. Every strike was incredibly powerful, and it was as if a lightning bolt sent shocks through my body and roared throughout my skull.

I remember darkness, a peaceful midnight black, like a dark velvet curtain, and it enveloped me into a cocoon of silent stillness.

Slowly, I emerged from a dark abyss. I heard a voice calling my name and the sound of people crying. I sensed confusion around me, and waves of pain were shooting through my body.

My next memory is seeing my husband Doug standing beside the backboard that I was lying on. I felt a tingling sensation in the crown of my head that later descended throughout my body. I knew something was wrong, very wrong. I couldn’t speak or move. I traveled in and out of consciousness, confused by two very different worlds that were oddly connected, one draped in velvety darkness and the other bright and surreal.

In the weeks that followed, I was disoriented and had become hypersensitive to light, noise and crowds. I suffered from severe headaches, nausea, imbalance and confusion. Then ten days after the accident, I awoke, only to realize that I had lost my ability to speak and when my speech returned I had developed a wee Scottish brogue. I roll my r’s, shorten my ing’s, and think everything is grrraaannd and grrrreeeaat! This has been quite a surprise to my family and friends, who have known me all of my life and know that my roots are in Kent Bridge, Canada, not Inverness, Scotland! My accent is a consequence of the fall, and I am one of only sixty people in the world who has been diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome as a result of stroke or acquired brain injury.

Although my new wee brogue is an adjustment I could live with, there were many changes that have been challenging and difficult. I had trouble coping with simple day-to-day tasks and I would become frustrated and angry. My dark bedroom and sleep became my only escape from the chaos around me as even sitting watching TV or hearing the pots and pans clang and utensils hit the plate irritated me and made me escape to my room time and time again.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks drifted into years. I flowed in and out of depression, sinking into the abyss for months. I was diagnosed by my neuropsychologist as “completely disabled” due to my inability to process my thoughts, make decisions, problem solve or multi task, but I desperately wanted to return to the woman I was before.

I wanted control over my life again. I wanted the ability to fly and soar with speed and confidence, as I had done before. I yelled at God for the injustice.

Why had this happened? How was I supposed to contribute to life when I did not even know who I had become? Where was the person who so easily swept through life taking each new challenge with vigor and exhilaration?

Until one day I made the decision to “get back up on the horse again” and realized that just because I coped less didn’t mean it was hopeless.

After struggling with my new reality for three years, I’d finally had enough, enough of feeling frustrated, enough of feeling isolated, and enough of being unable to cope with day-to-day life. So over the next few years, I researched and tested a multitude of traditional and non-traditional therapeutic coping strategies, until I devised a holistic routine that provided me with the relief I was desperately seeking.

Slowly, but surely, I emerged from my cocooned state and rejoined the world, born anew. I began to realize that there was much that I should, and could, be “grate-full” for in the midst of the tragedy of the “great fall.”

Malachi, whose name means “Messenger of God” has helped me as a result of my accident to learn a number of life lessons that I say are “straight from the horse’s mouth”.

First, Malachi has taught me what my priorities should be. He has taught me about what I really need, not just what I want. Our newest technologies and toys only excite us for a time. We crave more speed, noise, gadgets, brain numbing TV, or a stimulating Wii game to cover our true feelings of sadness, loneliness, and lack of true connection with others and ourselves. Thomas Merton, an American writer and mystic, states, “We are so obsessed with doing that we have no time and no imagination left for being.”

Malachi’s greatest message he gives is to be still, rest, and be kind to yourself and others. As I have said, I used to always be one to get’r done! Now I can’t, at least not the way I used to. However, now I’m able to live in moments, incredible moments, where I am able to be still, breathe and soak in the sunsets, full moons, deer running in our fields, and fall colors and smells.

One night when I went to fill the water tank, Malachi met me at the gate, as he usually does. He rested his head on my left shoulder, then gently, quietly, and ever so slowly, lifted his head and put it on my right shoulder. I felt him push his neck towards my ear, and I could hear his heartbeat and breathing. It felt like the very rhythm of life. To me, it was a sacred moment in time.

If I had not fallen, if I had not had this accident, I would have missed the very rhythm of life. Be sure to pause in your day, and acknowledge the slightest good, positive, and hopeful part of your life. Be sure to catch one breath or hear one heart beat to feel the very presence of God.

"Diets, like clothes, should be tailored to you." - Joan Rivers
"Is There A Food For That?"

By Lisa Best

“Eat anything you like! It’s important to keep your strength up when you have cancer.” My friend’s oncologist told her. “Diet has no affect on cancer anyway.” He elaborated.

No matter how many times I hear doctors say that diet doesn’t matter, it still frustrates me. The field of nutrition is like Rodney Dangerfield – "We just don’t get no respect."

But maybe we haven’t earned it yet.

Maybe we haven’t done a good enough job of getting the word out about the negative effects certain foods and environmental toxins can have on our health.

Funny how most people know the proper fuel to put in their car’s gas tanks for optimum efficiency, but rarely do they (or apparently their well-meaning doctors) know what to put in their own stomachs to optimize good health.

After all, you wouldn’t dream of putting saltwater, sugar or sludge in your car’s gas tank, but sometimes we eat foods equally damaging in the form of processed foods, fast foods and high fructose corn syrup without realizing the dangers.

If we treated our cars in the same way (try running your car on sludge) we would be laughing at the obvious absurdity of using the wrong fuel source to power our gadgets. But most of us don’t yet see the parallel absurdity in our junk food diets!

Even though obesity rates are skyrocketing, we don’t seem to connect the dots – we don’t acknowledge that increased high fructose corn syrup found in almost all processed food and drinks is making us sick. Or that the fried fast food we eat on the run is inflammatory, and is damaging our blood vessel linings and driving increased cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk.

But unlike cars, we do more than just burn fuel when we eat. We use food to build the framework and matrix of our bodies. We break down the food we eat into proteins, carbohydrates and fats that literally become the structural building materials for our body. So if we are putting garbage in, is it any surprise that our systems break down and our disease rates go up?

Doesn’t it make sense that the structural integrity of your body would weaken if you were using inferior products to build your walls? Everyone in construction and manufacturing understands that inferior materials yield inferior products. Surely most of us can understand that our bodies need superior quality foods to produce optimal energy and structural integrity.

No, as nutritionists we have not yet convinced doctors or consumers the vital connections between healthy food, a strong body and superior healing.

But I’m personally trying every way I know to get the word out! I want everyone to understand how food affects good health and how we have much more control over our disease processes than most of us believe.

Of course my friend’s diet is vitally important when she is undergoing the stress of chemotherapy, radiation and cancer. Of course it matters what she eats to maintain her strength. Some foods will nourish and protect her cells while others are destructive and can feed her cancer. Wouldn’t you want to know which foods hurt you, and which foods might help you grow stronger as you fight cancer? It is simply not true that all foods react the same in the body, or that what you eat doesn’t matter.

And believe it or not, there are multiple dietary protocols designed specifically to support and restore your good health. One example is Gerson Therapy, created by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1930’s, which advocates detoxifying and flooding the body with nutrient-dense veggie and fruit juices to defeat cancer with increased oxygenation, enzymes, and nutrients.

The Gerson Diet can be used not only for cancer, but for any weakness caused by toxin overload and cell starvation. The idea is to flood the body with easily absorbable nutrients to supply much needed raw materials while also eliminating any foods associated with increased toxicity. Results are astounding for those willing to stick with the protocol.

Bottom line is that a few proactive, forward thinking physicians and researchers have been thinking outside the box to discover targeted diets to strengthen and reinforce our bodies against the toxins in our food and environment.

In fact many chronic diseases can be improved or healed completely with diets designed to support healing. For instance, the GAPS Diet created by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride addresses the neurological damage in autistic children and several specialized diets exist for people suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Even Gluten-free protocols have gained popularity as more people acknowledge improved symptoms when they eliminate inflammatory gluten-containing products from their diet.

In a world with increasing levels of environmental pollutants, and a food supply filled with processed, fried, nutrient-deficient, chemically-laden (with additives, preservatives, pesticides, herbicides,) and genetically modified foods it is no surprise that our chronic diseases are skyrocketing.

Just like the saying “There’s an app for that!” for most illnesses “There’s a dietary protocol for that!” too. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, obesity, autism, you name the illness. There are clinically proven strategies to support healing through dietary choices. I believe this concept so strongly that I named my company Healing With Nutrition, and I work daily to provide as much information as possible to people seeking targeted dietary information to assist their healing.

No, we still haven’t convinced the world that what you eat matters. But I’m going to keep talking about it, and writing about it, and working with clients to improve their health with nutrition until maybe someday I’ll hear a doctor say, “There’s a food to help you with that!”

In the meantime, if you have a plaguing health issue right now, have you investigated the foods that might support your healing?

Until next time . . .

Do you suffer from “FLC”? (Feeling Like Crud?) Do you have gas, bloating, indigestion or fatigue… in other words, FLC? “Feeling like crud?) When you’re exhausted, depleted, and out of sorts, you probably know that your diet plays some part.

The question is, what do you change? Should you eliminate wheat, or dairy? Then what’s left of your favorite foods? With the “diet rules” changing every day, it’s easy to throw up your hands and say, “I’ll just eat what I want, since nothing makes sense.”

The problem is… you’re still not feeling well. Health begins with your diet, but not just any diet. Despite the latest studies that tell you to eat one specific type of food, or eliminate a complete food group, there is no perfect diet for everyone. The very foods that your best friend thrives on can make you sick.

However, there is a perfect diet for YOU. We each have our own genetic makeup, habits, lifestyles and preferences. With wise guidance and a little experimentation, finding the right foods for you can help you regain your health, and feel energized and rejuvenated.

If you’re tired of feeling sick and tired, maybe it’s time for a change. Are you ready to take this journey to find the diet that’s perfect for you?

Quick Health Tip

Relaxing Breath Can Beat Stress!

To relieve everyday stress and prevent blood pressure from rising, consider this quick and easy breathing exercise you can do literally anywhere.

  1. Breathe in to the count of 8 (fill lungs completely, expand lower abdomen)
  2. Hold for a count of 8 (hold breath)
  3. Release for a count of 8 (release breath slowly and evenly)

Repeat the Breathe/Hold/Release cycle 3 times and re-evaluate stress levels. If necessary, rest then run 3 cycles again.

The only side effect of this exercise is increased lung volume and oxygenation!
