When you tell people in your day-to-day life that you’ve received a long service award for volunteering, the typical response is usually a polite, “Oh, that’s nice.”

It’s a kind reaction, but it often comes because people outside the emergency services circle don’t fully grasp what a 15-year milestone actually represents.
They don’t automatically picture the realities of the role: the late-night shifts, the weekends and public holidays spent away from family, or the intense focus required when coordinating marine safety communications.
This month, I was incredibly proud to officially receive my 15-Year Clasp for the Marine Rescue NSW Long Service Medal, presented by Commissioner Todd Andrews.
The Reality Behind the Medal
Serving as a state radio operator and leader with Marine Rescue Sydney at the State Comms Centre has been a journey of immense growth, teamwork, and responsibility. Over the last decade and a half, our teams have stood watch over the New South Wales boating community, providing a vital lifeline to those who rely on us in times of need.
Volunteering in this capacity isn’t just a hobby; it’s a commitment to professionalism and selfless service. It means showing up on the days when it’s tough, keeping a cool head under pressure, and knowing that the radio transmission or log you handle could be the difference-maker in an emergency on the water.
Why We Do It: Finding Your Purpose
People often ask why emergency service volunteers dedicate so many unpaid hours to an organisation. The answer is simple: Purpose.
There is a unique, profound satisfaction that comes from knowing your skills and time are directly contributing to saving lives. It grounds you, connects you to your community, and surrounds you with a caliber of people who share the core values of dedication and integrity.
I am deeply grateful for the journey so far, for the camaraderie within Marine Rescue NSW, and for the continued opportunity to support our mission.
If you’ve been looking for a way to give back, challenge yourself, and find a deeper sense of purpose outside your daily routine, I highly encourage looking into volunteer emergency services. The commitment is real—but so is the impact.
