For a long time, I felt like my voice didn't matter. In 2003, my father walked out, saying he 'didn't want dependents anymore.' By 2008, he had remarried, but his new life didn't include me—I only met my step-mother once and they had no involvement in my world. Still, he mocked my career path, even while I was navigating life on a Disability Support Pension and trying to build businesses since 1995. I was often forced into the background, like at my Oma’s funeral in 1996 where I was made to stand in the row behind my siblings, or in 2010 when my sister dominated the emotional space at my grandmother’s funeral. I was labeled as a 'dependent,' but I chose to become an entrepreneur. I stopped waiting for permission and started building a life where my time and my voice are finally respected.
