Use your talents

A short lesson from Jim Rohn’s newsletter by Mark Victor Hansen on using what talents you already have and finding a way to perfect those talents as a person. Follow your own dreams
stop following that of others as a person.

Use What You’ve Already Got
by Mark Victor Hansen

Celebrating our natural talents should be an easy task. But for many people it’s emotionally exhausting. Why? Because a lot of folks fight their natural talents for one reason or another. Perhaps their parents wouldn’t approve of their artistic ability to paint or sculpt, because they want them to be a successful doctor or lawyer. Maybe someone’s gift wouldn’t seem to have the ability to bring the kind of wealth they desire. Sometimes people are simply afraid to pursue something that seems to come so easily to them – shouldn’t success be difficult? No, it shouldn’t and it isn’t. These are all excuses. And all the excuses in the world won’t destroy talent. It will be there, waiting for us to fight through fear and “what ifs” until we realize what we should have been doing our entire lives. We have been given natural talents for a reason – to use them to the betterment of the planet and those who inhabit it.

Your job is to find out what makes you buzz and begin to perfect it. Discover your brilliance in life and practice, practice, practice. You must hone your natural abilities to perfect them – concentrate on your strengths, not your weaknesses. Look at the world’s greatest athletes. They practice what they’re naturally good at – and what they love to do – every day. You don’t see Michael Jordan sitting around trying to decipher a strand of DNA. If that was something he was talented at, that’s what he would be doing. But it’s not. He’s a brilliant athlete and businessman. He sticks to what he does best and has reaped astounding rewards because of it.

There are only two steps to success – discover your brilliance and perfect it. Doing this will allow you to receive the wealth you truly deserve. “The only waste of human resources is letting them go unused.”

Enterprising People

The following is from Jim Rohn’s newsletter on enterprising people, people who see the opportunity everywhere and realise the chance they have to grow as a person.
They have may also see things so differently and the chance to build a better world, a better place. Such as revamping a old part of town, changing peoples lives, becoming
a better person, starting a family,  these people see something different and build that world as a person. They know it can be done and its ok to them, the believe in that
future and that world and they will create such.

Creating Opportunity
by Jim Rohn

An enterprising person is one who comes across a pile of scrap metal and sees the making of a wonderful sculpture. An enterprising person is one who drives through an old decrepit part of town and sees a new housing development. An enterprising person is one who sees opportunity in all areas of life.

To be enterprising is to keep your eyes open and your mind active. It’s to be skilled enough, confident enough, creative enough and disciplined enough to seize opportunities that present themselves... regardless of the economy.

A person with an enterprising attitude says, “Find out what you can before action is taken.” Do your homework. Do the research. Be prepared. Be resourceful. Do all you can in preparation of what's to come.

Enterprising people always see the future in the present. Enterprising people always find a way to take advantage of a situation, not be burdened by it. And enterprising people aren't lazy. They don't wait for opportunities to come to them, they go after the opportunities. Enterprise means always finding a way to keep yourself actively working toward your ambition.

Enterprise is two things. The first is creativity. You need creativity to see what’s out there and to shape it to your advantage. You need creativity to look at the world a little differently. You need creativity to take a different approach, to be different.

What goes hand-in-hand with the creativity of enterprise is the second requirement: the courage to be creative. You need courage to see things differently, courage to go against the crowd, courage to take a different approach, courage to stand alone if you have to, courage to choose activity over inactivity.

And lastly, being enterprising doesn’t just relate to the ability to make money. Being enterprising also means feeling good enough about yourself, having enough self-worth to want to seek advantages and opportunities that will make a difference in your future. And by doing so you will increase your confidence, your courage, your creativity and your self-worth—your enterprising nature.

Leadership and learning

As appeared in Jim Rohn’s newsletter a post that shows that leaders are quite often prepared to learn. The successful teams are prepared to learn new things reguarly, that is the only way that success really does work.

Thoughts on Successful People
by Chris Widener

I was hired to do some training for a sales team from one of the largest companies in America. The first thing I noticed about this successful sales team was that they had a sense of humor! They simply weren't a terribly serious bunch of people. Instead, they saw that life was to be enjoyed and that means they were able to laugh a little bit. Sure, there were varying levels in this but they all had a sense of humor. They were able to laugh at circumstances, and they were able to laugh at themselves. It was quite refreshing and a core element of their success, I'm sure.

The second thing I found out about this group was that they did not achieve their success through pedigree, but through hard work. They didn't come from families that gave them a free pass into the upper echelon of the corporate world and they didn't get a head start from upper-crust universities. What got them to where they are now? Hard work! That's right, another example that if you put your mind to it, work hard and get in the right situation, you can achieve great things! These folks work long hours and are disciplined in the work they do. And it is paying off.

The third thing I noticed about this team is that they are learners. They were always engaged in the learning process. During my sessions they were engaged and listening. You could see their minds processing the information. They were asking questions and applying the material to their work and their lives. They wanted to improve in any way that they could. It was also interesting to watch them in their team meetings led by their sales manager. They were very interactive and were learning from one another. None of them was above learning from a peer.

Activity and Labor

Jim has such a wonderful way of talking about Activity and Labour that unless we work the activity will begin to overwhelm us as a person. From Jim Rohn’s vitamins for the mind
in Jim Rohn’s weekly newsletter.

Vitamins for the Mind by Jim Rohn

Activity/Labor

You must learn to translate wisdom and strong feelings into labor.

The miracle of the seed and the soil is not available by affirmation; it is only available by labor.

Make rest a necessity, not an objective. Only rest long enough to gather strength.

Without constant activity, the threats of life will soon overwhelm the values.

The few who do are the envy of the many who only watch.

For every promise, there is a price to pay.

“Vitamins for the Mind” is a weekly sampling of original quotes on a specific topic taken from The Treasury of Quotes by Jim Rohn. The burgundy hardbound book with gold-foil lettering is a collection of more than 365 quotes on 60 topics gathered from Jim’s personal journals, seminars and books and spanning more than 40 years.
